Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs)
LHINs are not-for-profit entities responsible for planning, integrating and funding local health services. They plan and manage the health services delivered in hospital, long-term care facilities, Community Health Centres, community support services and mental health agencies. LHINs are based on the principle that health care services are best planned at the local level because the community is best able to determine its health needs and priorities.
LHIN Regions

Improving health care for patients
LHINs improve patient care by planning services that meet local health needs. They ensure that patients have better access to coordinated and integrated health care services, and involve people in their geographic area in making decisions about their health care services.
LHINs will work with hospitals, long-term care homes, community health centres, community support services and mental health agencies in their areas to identify the health care professionals they need. They will provide advice to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care about the number and type of health care professionals required across the province’ and assist the health care organizations in their area with recruitment and retention.

The Health Human Resources (HHR) Toolkit — understanding the organization of health human resources in Ontario — is produced by the HealthForceOntario Health Human Resources Strategy Division. The toolkit provides LHINs with analytic supports for local health system planning activities.
