Stream I: Medical Licensing

What do I need to successfully compete for a residency spot in Ontario?

Family Medicine or another Medical Specialty
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) is the professional body that regulates the practice of medicine in Ontario and issues certificates of registration to enable doctors to practise. The qualifications below apply to Canadian medical school graduates, Canadians Studying Abroad and International Medical Graduates (IMGs).

You must have the following qualifications as set out by the CPSO:

Online Registration

Are you an internationally educated health professional living in Ontario and seeking information about the regulatory process in a regulated health profession? If so, please click on the Register Online button below and follow the steps to become a registered client of the Access Centre.

  • A medical degree from an acceptable medical school.
  • Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.
  • Passing results on the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) Qualifying Exams, Parts I and II (MCCQEI and MCCQEII). Most IMGs must pass the MCC Evaluating Exam before being eligible to take the Qualifying Exams.
  • Completion of one year of postgraduate training or active medical practice in Canada, or completion of a full clinical clerkship at an accredited Canadian medical school.
  • Certification by either the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada

How the Medical Licensing Stream will get you there?

The Medical Licensing Stream is made up of 6 components that will help you meet the CPSO requirements. After an orientation session, the other five components focus on strengthening or upgrading a core skill that will help you compete for a residency training spot in Ontario.

Eligibility Requirements

The Orientation Session
This session provides a comprehensive overview of the Licensing Stream. You will learn about the Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS), the Centre for the Evaluation of Health Professionals Educated Abroad (CEHPEA), the MCC exams and services available at the Access Centre.

The Medical Council of Canada Session
This session provides detailed information about the MCC exams. You will learn more about the MCC Evaluating Exam (MCC EE) and the MCC Qualifying Exam parts 1 and 2. The Access Centre offers one-on-one counselling throughout and introduces you to related services.

This session is open to all registered clients planning to take the MCC EE or MCC QE1 exam in the near future.

The CE1 Session
This session provides detailed information about the General Comprehensive Clinical Examination (CE1) - a general broad-based comprehensive clinical examination designed to test a candidate’s appropriateness for the PGY1 level.

The session is for an entry-level training position. All eligible candidates applying for assessment to Family Medicine or to a specialty at the PGY1 level are encouraged to participate in the CE1. The Access Centre offers one-on-one counselling throughout and introduces you to related services.

This session is open to all registered clients who meet the CEHPEA eligibility criteria

The CaRMS Session
This session provides detailed information about the Canadian Residency Matching Service. In 2006, Ontario began to offer a dedicated CaRMS match for Ontario IMGs that is separate from, but parallel to, the match for Canadian medical graduates. The Access Centre offers one-on-one counselling throughout and introduces you to related services.

The Interview Skills Session
This session provides detailed information about the interview skills necessary to prepare for the 2009 CaRMS selection process. The Access Centre will offer one-on-one counselling throughout and introduce you to related services.

The One-on-One Interview Skills Session
This session will be offered to IMGs who have been offered an interview for a residency position. It will provide more information on the interview elements required to compete for residency positions. The Access Centre will also provide one-on-one counselling throughout and introduce you to related services.
