Restricted Registration for Specialty Residents

Restricted Registration refers to residents registered in postgraduate medical education programs leading to certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) who provide clinical services outside of their residency program.

Residents gain valuable experience in a variety of practice settings; build confidence in to ease the transition to practice; and earn extra income.

Employers gain competent physician resource during demand periods; expose residents to community’s unique practice and lifestyle opportunities; supplying physicians that are fully competent and qualified to deliver services. High levels of satisfaction have been reported by hospital staff and patients.

Key points at a minimum:

  • Must have successfully completed MCCQE Parts 1 and 2
  • Must have completed 18 months of residency training
  • Must be in good academic standing
  • Must be in approved postgraduate training program
  • Must have approval from Program Director and PG Dean
  • Remuneration arrangements are discussed between the Resident and the employer
  • Must find "supervisor"

The average processing time from initiation of application to CPSO approval is 4 – 10 weeks.
