High School Student

You probably already know that you need to go to medical school to become a physician. Even though that seems a long way off from high school, you can set yourself on a path that will lead you there.

Getting Your Ontario Secondary School Diploma

Before applying for medical school, you need to attend university. The first step is working towards your Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), which is necessary for admission to university. Each college and university program has its own requirements, so refer to the program calendars and speak with your high school academic counsellor to make sure you meet the criteria.

It’s worth noting the Ministry of Education provides high school students with the opportunity to customize their education through the Specialist High Skills Major. Students in this program can focus their learning on a career path (such as health and wellness) and still meet the requirements for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

If you are a grade 10 or 11 student in southwestern Ontario, consider attending MedQuest, a 1-week summer program designed to provide students with realistic experiences in the field of medicine using simulator training, peer workshops and the opportunity to watch physicians and nurses in a clinical setting.

Volunteering in a health care setting or talking with physicians may also help expand your understanding of the profession and the life outside of the work environment.

Applying to Universities

During your final year of high school, you can apply to universities that interest you. Apply online through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre.

International Students

If you are an international student, read about international admission criteria to university.
