Recruitment and Retention

These HealthForceOntario programs are helping to make sure Ontarians can access a health care provider when and where they need them.

HealthForceOntario Marketing and Recruitment Agency
The HealthForceOntario Marketing and Recruitment Agency, an initiative of the HealthForceOntario strategy, is designed to help increase the number of qualified health professionals practising in Ontario by:

  • Recruiting qualified health care professionals into Ontario.
  • Assisting internationally educated health professionals living in Ontario to become qualified to practise in the province.
  • Retaining Ontario’s domestically trained health care professionals.
  • Facilitating the delivery of clinical care through the administration of locum programs.
  • Administering and managing interprofessional care grant programs.

Provincial Nursing Strategy Initiatives

The following initiatives fall under the Provincial Nursing Strategy:

Late Career Initiative
The Late Career Initiative is a program that supports nurses over age 55 to spend part of their time doing less physically demanding work, such as mentoring other nurses or teaching patients. This gives experienced nurses a break from the physical demands of front line nursing and keeps them from retiring early – so the health care system can benefit from their knowledge and experience.

Telementoring Project
HealthForceOntario is looking at the potential of technology to support primary care providers working in northern and remote communities, reduce professional isolation, and provide opportunities for career development. The Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario is leading the Telementoring project. A Telementoring Tool Kit for Nurse Practitioners in Rural and Remote Areas (TMentRKit), a user-friendly resource — designed for both mentors and mentees — has been developed.

Grow Your Own Nurse Practitioner
A program that helps communities recruit nurse practitioners. Organizations with a ministry-funded NP position that has been vacant for more than a year can use those funds to sponsor a local registered nurse to study to become a primary health care nurse practitioner. In exchange, the new primary health care NP must agree to work for the sponsoring organization for two years.
