Nursing Graduate Guarantee Overview

The Nursing Graduate Guarantee is an initiative of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care aimed at ensuring that every new nursing graduate (RN and RPN) who wishes to work full time in Ontario will have that opportunity.
The Nursing Graduate Portal
The Nursing Graduate Guarantee initiative uses the Nursing Graduate Portal to link new graduates with employers. The government is also providing funding to create bridging positions to support new graduates in finding full-time employment immediately upon graduation and to provide them with an extensive orientation that will lead to permanent employment in many cases. These employment opportunities will be available to the hospital, long-term care, home care, mental health, public health, and primary care sectors.
-
Register on the Nursing Graduate Portal
Interested nursing graduates must register on the Nursing Graduate Portal to make use of the online service. New graduates can then consult the portal and apply for new graduate nursing positions with as many employers as they wish. The site also provides résumé writing and interview tips.
-
Apply for Available Positions
Once a new graduate has registered on the portal, they may apply for temporary bridging positions that have been posted by the employers in the new graduate category. Interested employers can then invite the new graduate for an interview. New graduates will only be competing for these positions with their peers who are also registered on the portal. Following interviews, employers will send letters of offer through the online system, giving new graduates the chance to choose the position they desire.
-
Apply for Temporary Registration with CNO
Once an employment offer for a temporary bridging position has been accepted, the new graduate will need to apply for and receive Temporary Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) before they begin their employment.
Nursing Graduate Guarantee Benefits
These temporary bridging positions allow time for the new graduate to benefit from a lengthy "above staffing complement" orientation, while establishing a relationship with employers that would help them in securing permanent employment as jobs became available.
New graduates will be paid sector-appropriate wages. Employers are expected to commit to best efforts to bridge the new graduate to full-time employment. The government will work with employers and others to develop additional comprehensive strategies to raise the level of full time opportunities for all nurses in the health care system.
Government's Commitment
The Nursing Graduate Guarantee builds on the success of the New Graduate Initiative, a component of the Ontario Nursing Strategy. It reflects this government's commitment to ensure that every new graduate will have the opportunity to work in any health sector or geographic area of the province.
