Physicians are vital to the province’s health care system. The government of Ontario is committed to providing physicians with opportunities and incentives to ensure that Ontarians have access to a physician when they need one.

To meet this commitment, the government is using a mix of strategies including:

• expanding medical school enrolment
• opening the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and medical education campuses in Windsor, St. Catharines, Waterloo and Mississauga
• increasing the number of family medicine residents in Ontario
• removing barriers for international medical graduates
• introducing recruitment and retention initiatives, particularly in underserviced areas of the province
