Occupational Therapists

The College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO) is the regulatory body for occupational therapy practice in Ontario.

The College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario is a self-governing body that protects the public interest and improves their health and well-being by registering, regulating, and supporting the ongoing competency of occupational therapists.

Registration Requirements

To practise occupational therapy in Ontario, internationally educated occupational therapists must hold a Certificate of Registration and meet the requirements set out by the College. To become eligible for the Certificate of Registration, internationally educated occupational therapists must meet the following registration requirements:

  1. Be legally entitled to work in Canada
  2. Proof of graduation from an occupational therapy program from a school, college or university approved by the College
  3. An academic assessment report from a credential agency approved by the College
  4. Meet the current practice hours required by the College
  5. Confirmation that you have passed the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) certification exam (if applying for a general certificate)
  6. Pass the examination approved by the College
  7. Evidence of language fluency, either in English or French
  8. Have professional liability insurance, which includes a sexual abuse therapy and counselling fund endorsement

The Access Centre within HFO MRA can assist internationally educated occupational therapists on their path to practise by providing advisory services by appointment via telephone, in-person or Skype.
