Psychologists

The College of Psychologists of Ontario is the governing body for Psychologists and Psychological Associates in Ontario.

Registration Requirements

To practise as a Psychologist in Ontario, internationally educated psychologists must hold a Certificate of Registration and meet the requirements set out by the College of Psychologists of Ontario. To become eligible for the Certificate of Registration, internationally educated psychologists will need to meet the following registration requirements:

  1. Hold a doctoral degree from a program of study with content that is primarily psychological in nature as required in the guidelines published by the College.

A Psychological Associate must:

  1. Hold a master’s degree from a program of study with content that is primarily psychological in nature as required in the guidelines published by the College; and
  2. Complete 4 or more years of full-time (1,500 hours/year), or equivalent part-time, post-master’s degree experience.

In addition, all applicants applying for registration as either psychologist or psychological associate must meet the following requirements:

  1. Applicant must be either a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant or hold a valid employment authorization
  2. Be fluent in English or French
  3. Complete an academic assessment of credentials from an assessment body approved by the College
  4. Meet the current supervised practice hours required by the College
  5. Complete any further professional training or experience that the College requires
  6. Pass the College’s Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP), the Jurisprudence and Ethics examination (JEE) and the Oral Examination
  7. Have professional liability insurance

*Psychologists have a doctoral degree (PHD). Psychological Associates have a master’s degree, and have to complete 4 or more years of full-time practice (1,500 hours/year)
