Physician Trained Outside of Ontario (Licence Eligible)

Navigating your way through licensing and certification in Ontario can be challenging, time-consuming and complicated. Learn how HealthForceOntario Marketing and Recruitment Agency (HFO MRA) can help you achieve your goals.
Licensing requirements in Ontario
To practise medicine in Ontario you will need a licence from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). To be eligible for an independent licence, physicians must complete two sets of exams:
If you do not currently have these credentials, there may be other options. The CPSO also offers registration to doctors who have training, examinations and/or practice experience in certain other jurisdictions, through various registration policies. You may be eligible for registration under one of these policies if you:
- Have completed an accredited residency program in the United States and have completed the USMLE and board certification exams;
- Have completed accredited training in a jurisdiction recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada;
- Are currently practising in another Canadian province; or
- Are in the process of taking Canadian qualifying and/or certification exams.
