The need for physicians
The Ontario government recognizes the valuable contribution Canadians who have studied medicine abroad, and other international medical graduates (IMGs), can make to the health care system in Ontario. The government is focusing on providing education and assessment programs, lowering barriers to registration for IMGs and other physicians, and creating rewarding work environments to attract physicians to Ontario.

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s health human resources strategy – HealthForceOntario – is designed to make Ontario the employer of choice for health care providers. Supporting, attracting and developing our health force is one of the most important priorities for our health care system.

HealthForceOntario is an innovative, co-ordinated and competitive approach to health human resources. It encompasses, in large measure, better access to training and employment, more transparency and increased opportunities in the health care system for international medical graduates. The Access Centre for Internationally Educated Health Professionals is a single point of access for comprehensive information, resources, and counseling to help internationally educated health professionals living in Ontario enter the workforce. Located in Toronto, the Access Centre works closely with key stakeholders, such as regulatory bodies, professional and internationally educated health professional associations and bridging programs, to ensure its success.
