Physician Eligibility

Locum physicians may choose to apply to participate in one of or both the Urgent Locum Tenens Program and Respite Locum Tenens Program. Physician eligibility for both Urgent and Respite Locum Tenens Programs is the same.

Physician eligibility to provide locum services through the NSLP includes:

Geographic Location:

  • Base practice must be at least 40 kilometres away from the locum site; and
  • Permanent residence must be at least 40 kilometres away from the locum site.

Licensing Requirements:

  • A valid Certificate of Registration from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO).
  • A current Certificate of Professional Conduct from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO).
  • A valid certificate from The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
  • Evidence of medical practice protection coverage (CMPA Membership Update) or equivalent.
  • An active Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) billing number and billing privileges.

Note: First-time locum physicians are required to meet all of the above criteria and submit an Application for Northern Specialist Locum Programs form with a Confirmation of Banking Information form.
