Understanding the Canadian Health Care System

This 20-hour course held over 5 sessions offers IEHPs an interactive classroom based understanding of the Ontario health care system including the key concepts and principles of professional practice needed to work as a health care professional in Ontario.

Using a variety of classroom activities; such as lectures, role-play, case studies, group discussion and guest speakers, participants will have the opportunity to become familiar with the Canadian health care system, context and culture.

This course will focus on:

  • The federal and provincial governments’ involvement in health care
  • Cultural competence, communications, patient centered practice and safety
  • Ethics in health care
  • Working with other health care professionals
  • The importance of professionalism and lifelong learning

Session Dates:

The course includes 5 sessions over 5 consecutive weeks. You are expected to attend all five sessions.

Classes on each date run from 10:00am to 2:00pm

Eligibility Criteria:

To take part in this course, you must:

  • Be an Internationally Educated Health Professional
  • Have a demonstrated English fluency at CLB level 7 or higher (or equivalent - IELTS, TOEFL)
  • Be in process of assessment or applying soon
  • Commit to all five dates of the course
  • Be a registered client of the HFO MRA Access Centre. If you are not a client of the Access Centre, please register online
  • Have met with an IEHP Advisor

You will be contacted by email to confirm that we have received your application.

Your application will be assessed and you will either:

  1. Be contacted by your Advisor to discuss your eligibility for the course, OR
  2. Receive an email confirmation that you are registered for a particular term.
