Registration Requirements for Internationally Educated Dental Technologists
To practise as a regulated health professional in Ontario, you must be a member of your profession’s regulatory college and hold a certificate of registration. Regulated health professionals are required by law to deliver competent, ethical and professional services, and are accountable to the public through their respective colleges.
The College of Dental Technologists of Ontario (CDTO) is the governing body established by the provincial government to regulate the practice of dental technology in Ontario. Its mission is to protect the public interest by regulating and guiding dental technologists.
Ontario Registration Requirements
To practise as a dental technologist in Ontario, internationally educated dental technologists must hold a General Certificate of Registration and meet the requirements set out by the College of Dental Technologists of Ontario (CDTO). To become eligible for the General Certificate of Registration, internationally educated dental technologists must pursue the following:
-
Submit the Registration Examination Application to the College of Dental Technologists of Ontario (CDTO).
-
Submit an application to the International Credential Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS) to have your credentials assessed.
-
The registration committee will review the application and results of the credential assessment to determine your eligibility to sit the registration exam. Possible outcomes are that you are eligible to sit the registration exam, or your application does not fully meet the requirements to sit the registration exam. If your application does meet the requirements, the registration committee may determine that before sitting for the registration exam you must either:
-
Attempt and pass the CDTO eligibility exam;
-
Require additional training/courses;
-
Require to complete a dental technology program at a post-secondary level institution; or
-
Complete other requirements as directed by the registration committee.
-
Once you have passed the CDTO registration exam, finalize and complete the application for a certificate of registration with the CDTO and pay the applicable fees.
