The Northern Ontario Resident Streamlined Training and Reimbursement Program (NORSTAR) supports increased access to Northern Ontario learning experiences for medical residents and fellows from Canadian medical schools, while also enabling immediate and longer-term physician support to communities in the North East and North West Ontario Health Regions.
The NORSTAR program will be piloted for three years (ending March 31, 2026) and evaluated.
The program contains three streams:
1. Postgraduate Elective Learners
This stream provides travel and accommodation expense reimbursement to medical residents and fellows from Canadian medical schools completing electives in the North East and North West Ontario Health Regions.
This stream provides travel and accommodation expense reimbursement to medical residents and fellows from Canadian medical schools when accompanying faculty physicians from their home institution on locum or other work assignments in the North East and North West Ontario Health Regions.
3. Residents in the Restricted Registration Program
This stream provides travel and accommodation expense reimbursement to medical residents and fellows from Canadian medical schools providing clinical services in the North East and North West Ontario Health Regions under the Professional Association of Residents of Ontario managed Restricted Registration Program.
Note: Residents, fellows, and/or faculty physicians participating in any of the three NORSTAR streams must be licensed with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) and ensure compliance with relevant hospital credentialing requirements.
